Our Shepton Mallet Charity Shop and Fundraising Office raises vital funding for SOS Africa enabling the grassroots organisation to provide access to education for vulnerable children in South Africa.
SOS Africa Charity Shop, Shepton Mallet
Founded by Shepton Mallet student Matt Crowcombe during his gap year to South Africa in 2003, SOS Africa has received invaluable support from businesses, schools and community groups from across Somerset. In April 2013 Matt and his family opened a charity shop and fundraising headquarters at 44 High Street, Shepton Mallet. Since that day, thanks to growing numbers of staff, volunteers, customers and fundraisers, the charity’s fundraising efforts have flourished and enabling the organisation to provide life-changing support to growing numbers of children across South Africa.
Fondly known by its customers as ‘Aladin’s Cave,’ the charity shop is fully stocked with a wide range of second-hand and new clothes, bric-a-brac and electrical items. As well as raising funds for SOS Africa’s Education Projects, the shop supports the local community by keeping prices low. The charity shop is also famous for its African theme with a resident giraffe called Monduli and palm tree which also functions as a monkey fundraising meter. Not long after the opening of the shop, a young girl visited with her mother and with an amazed expression on her face asked: “Mummy are we in Africa?”
