16 years on from its creation, the SOS Africa Children’s Charity has launched its 4th education programme at St Michael’s Farm School in Elgin, Western Cape, South Africa.
Since 2003 our grassroots charity has partnered schools based in Mafikeng, Somerset West and Grabouw with the aim of providing their students with learning support workshops and holistic after-school care programmes. This approach enables the SOS Africa staff to provide vital support to both children with learning difficulties and those from the poorest communities.
Thanks to the backing of our latest corporate sponsor Porta Romana and an enthusiastic group of new child sponsors, we recently identified St Michael’s School as an ideal candidate for partnership not only because of the great need among the local communities but also because we were inspired by the passion of the Principle and his staff. Whenever we walk through the school campus, we cannot help but be impressed by the positive atmosphere embodied by the vibrant colours and moral values which decorate the classrooms throughout.
SOS Africa’s Education Programme Manager, Abigail Snyders, is very excited by the potential of the new partnership: “It is a wonderful opportunity for these children. There is a powerful driving force inside every child; with the right support and a nurturing environment, you can make any vision, dream or desire a reality.”
And indeed, this support has already begun; from our new temporary home at the centre of the campus, SOS Africa now provides a reading programme for children in Grades 1-4 each morning and a holistic after-school programme to our scholarship scheme children (shown above) in the afternoons.
And his is just the beginning… thanks to Porta Romana sponsorship, SOS Africa will shortly begin construction work on a brand new education centre based on the St Michael’s Primary School Campus.
