It has been another emotional week in the Western Cape. Yesterday SOS Africa’s Emergency Food Relief Appeal formed an exciting new partnership with a soup kitchen in Snake Park, Grabouw. This life-saving initiative is run by an inspirational couple from their own home and feeds many hungry children and families from the local community.
When our staff arrived at the soup kitchen, they were taken aback by the sheer numbers of young children patiently waiting for food. Our team were met by Dennis, Tessa and their 3 volunteers and welcomed into their home. They were so appreciative of the donations which were immediately prepared and served to many grateful recipients; the relief on their faces visible for all to see.
To demonstrate the invaluable impact made by these contributions, we have quoted directly from messages we received from SOS Africa’s Karen, Des and Western Cape Trustee Helena shortly after they returned from delivering the food:
“Seeing those vulnerable and very hungry children standing in line very patiently was an incredibly emotional experience… At one point a desperately hungry child fainted. Working with these remarkable people who offer their home to cook 3 meals each day for their community was so touching. I cried all the way home, mainly out of happiness because in that moment of receiving their food, everything was okay; they have a meal and it is such a blessing to know that the children and families of that community will have full tummies today.”
Meanwhile, down the mountain in Somerset West, SOS Africa’s Emergency Food Appeal continues to sponsor the distribution of thousands of food packages to hungry families throughout the region via Taste & See. Each package is packed full of enough nutritious food to feed a family for the full month. This collaboration will continue to support those severely affected by the Coronavirus Lockdown for the duration of the year.
