The SOS Africa Charity Children embark on an exciting new gardening project and learn how to grow vegetables for the very first time...
Growing Vegetables for the First Time: South African Children Gardening Projects

We couldn’t agree more with Robert Brault; giving our children the opportunity to plant their own vegetables, nurture their growth and then enjoy the fruits of their labour are invaluable (and delicious) lessons. SOS Africa Aftercare Centres aim to teach the children both inside the classroom and outside; these raised beds are the best outdoor classroom! Since opening our new Education Centre in Grabouw the children have been desperate to start “digging in the garden!” When the day finally arrived no-one needed asking twice…

Firstly, we want to say a special thanks to Woodbender for donating these wonderful planters on wheels to add to our new garden!

We also received so many generous donations of seedlings, it’s so exciting to think these little things will grow into great big and delicious veggies.

We took great care to transfer them to their new homes where we promise to care for them everyday…

This means giving them a drink everyday! We collect rainwater from the school roofs for this because in the summer we don’t get much rain.

We are all so excited about our vegetable garden! Everyone is taking turns to do watering and hopefully soon we can all enjoy a feast together. We promise to keep you updated on the progress of our plants. If you have vegetable gardens too and have any really useful tips please write to us…
