Knitting Isn't Just for Grannies: South African Children Learn to Knit

Since she was 8 years old teacher Karen has been knitting and she discovered it had so many benefits!
Not only was it fun and creative but it was also good practice in counting, measuring and other basic form of numeracy. Above all it was a good stress reliever. SO, Karen decided it was time to teach us!

She bought her needles and yarn to the Aftercare Club. We were very curious and quite excited to learn something new. Some of the boys were hesitant because they thought knitting was for girls. Teacher Karen told then lots of boys knit, especially very stressed businessmen. We did some research of our own and found out about an ex-gangster who learnt to knit in prison and now sells his items to make money. Now we were ALL inspired!

Teacher Karen is delighted with our progress. She said, “I was wonderfully surprised! We now have 13 students in our knitting group and they are really learning fast. Naming the project “Knitting it Forward” is just to remind them to set goals for the future; whether it’s a project for themselves or a gift for someone. Further forward into their future it might be a useful way to earn an extra income. It really is so heart-warming to see them working together like this, so patiently tolerating each other as they learn a new craft.”
