With the help of their sponsors from the UK, SOS Africa's Grabouw children embark on new and exciting gardening projects...
“When you realise HEART and EARTH are spelled with the same letters it all starts to make sense.” Jennifer Bramley

Gardening has become the heart of our Grabouw Education Centre. Our building wraps around a magnificent big palm tree and looks out onto 24 raised beds. Many of these raised beds have been laid empty but not this summer! Lindsay and Angela are two sponsors who visited in February; as keen gardeners themselves they were thrilled to be set the task of “sorting out the garden with the kids”.

Getting prepared! Gardening is fun and really easy but does require some good preparation. So, we did, we prepared the soil, we prepared the beds, we prepared the compost, and we did it together, so it took no time at all.

We then planted out our seedlings or seeds. Here we are planting out beetroot seedlings, yum yum! We are planning to pickle some beetroot and also make some purply pink play dough with the juice.

Yum yum! Peas! Possibly the most satisfying vegetable to grow because it makes the best snack. I don’t think any of these will make it into the kitchen!

We are very proud of our garden! Now we just have to look after it and nurture each plant into full growth so that we can harvest all the delicious and nutritious rewards.

Finally, a great big, huge thank you to Lindsay and Angela for helping us get our garden started and to Dudley Rotary Club for your sponsorship. We hope to share more updates of our produce with you soon!
